IBPS PO is an exam conducted by Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) for recruitment of Probationary Officers for approximately 20 Participating Organisations. It conducts a three-phase exam every year for recruitment of thousands of post and lakh of candidates appear for the post.

Exam Pattern


IBPS PO consists of three Phase exam and to qualify for the exam a candidate is required to clear all phases. The Phase I exam is Computer Based Examination and qualifying in nature. Only candidates clearing in the exam can appear for the Main exam.


Phase I: Preliminary Examination

This examination consists of Objective Type – Multiple-choice questions only.  The questions will be bilingual for Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Ability. The exam consists of three sections with total marks 100 and total time allotted for the exam is 60 minutes. Each correct answer weightage is of 1 mark.

*In Phase I, there is negative marking of ½  mark for each wrong answer.

Phase – II: Main Examination:

Main Examination is further bifurcated into Objective Test comprising of 200 marks and Online Descriptive Test comprising of 50 marks. Descriptive Test will be administered immediately after completion of the Objective Test.

In English Language (Letter Writing) exam, a candidate is asked to write letter/application/essay/precis etc to test his/her English writing skills which is now a days become mandatory for the post.

Phase – III: Interview

Candidates who have been shortlisted in the Online Main examination will be called for Interview and based upon their performance in phase III; a merit list will be created subject to a candidate scoring minimum qualifying score in aggregate.

Educational Qualification: The minimum educational qualification is Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or Institute.

 Age Limit: A candidate must be above 21 years but below 30 year for eligible for applying for the posts. Moreover, there is an age relaxation permissible beyond upper age limit for the reserved categories which varies according to the category and maximum age relaxation a candidate can avail is up to 15 years.
